Both it as well as the company's next animated feature, "Bruno" -- a great awkward boy who discovers he's special forces -- will probably be launched at the same time as videogames and mobile programs. "What you would like to setup might be the smoothness as well as the story to make sure that the planet reaches know them," according to him. "Taco Master" might be the to start four programs developed together with Electronic Arts and Chillingo, onetime author of "Angry Wild wild birds." Two more games have since emerge for your Application Store beneath the deal -- "Torture Bunny" and "Finger Shoes" -- with "Fly or Die" along the way. REVIEW: The Adventures of Tintin Putt-Putts Plus a Terrier along with you

You'll find times when a lot of an optimistic factor and not enough meet half way and settle in to a comfortable middle ground. That’s the problem with Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin, which might be superior if it had been made using classical animation techniques rather than that performance-capture nonsense so when 3-D weren’t among its large selling points. But half way remains something, as well as the Adventures of Tintin is winning in the rousing, let’s-search-lower-a-treasure way, whenever you sort out — if you are in a position to — the Polar Express-style creepiness of animated figures who gaze through human-searching eyes. The look is modified within the graphic books of Herg, the pen title of Belgian author and illustrator Georges Remi (the pronunciation can be a playful turnaround of his initials), which trace the adventures from the ginger root root-haired cub reporter and, possibly much like importantly, the wriggly-butt high jinks of his fox terrier, Snowy. Part of the advantage of the books, the initial which came out in 1929, are their lo-fi visual clearness: Herg made his images in apparent yet soft colors layed out by fine but distinct black outlines, a comic-book drawing style that later found be known to as ligne claire. Type in Tintin comics is flat, but pleasingly so — there’s plenty of dimensionality inside the attendant particulars Herg clearly needed pleasure in adding (the drape from the cloth heavyweight coat, the soft wrinkle from the sock) and concept of motion and excitement moved over from frame to border. In the Tintin comic, Snowy’s tail is not still — you will not ever literally visualize it move, however, you simply know. Visually, The Adventures of Tintin isn’t everything ligne claire: Rather, it’s dimensional and rounded and shaded — even a lot more when compared to a movie designed to be seen only by 50 %-D might be. That is Spielberg’s first foray into 3-D, which he goes all to prove they can take action. But just what? Stuff that make Tintin enjoyable low on associated with that kind of technical prowess in comparison to Spielberg’s affection for your source material and also the obsessive eye for detail. (He and Healing For Healing For Peter Jackson, co-producers in the film, are usually long-term Tintin fans.) I started out disliking Tintin — I don’t care how technically smooth the performance-capture animation is anything made applying this hyperrealistic strategy is just pleading being held at arm’s length. However when I obtained over that Rosemary oil oil’s Baby, “What excuses perhaps you have used to his eyes?” feeling, and relaxed into what's essentially a cheerful (if your little manic) task of storytelling, Tintin increased being a lot more fun. The story here — modified from a number of Herg tales by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish — starts when Tintin (voiced by Jamie Bell) purchases one ship by getting an essential secret hidden inside. They are fully aware it’s important because dubious villain Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine (Difficulties) wants it, too. On the way of releasing that secret, Tintin and Snowy finish on the hi-jacked sea freighter, where they meet Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis), a boozy old seadog who, incidentally, bears an uncanny resemblance to Walter Matthau. Together they trigger an on adventure that can them within the ocean (having its billowing, moving waves) as well as the desert (where people liquid surf is exchanged for rippling slopes of sand). Snowy tags along completely, either aiding or leading to problems, and frequently both. Tintin’s plot is made of minor scrapes and narrowly avoided problems, plus it scampers from land to sea to abandon to city by getting an abandon that only seems reckless: All things in The Adventures of Tintin is meticulous — this is often a Steven Spielberg movie, ultimately. Nevertheless it’s fun to think about in many the film’s particulars, specifically if you possess a passing understanding from the Tintin books: The means by which Tintin’s camel-colored coat gets the kind of hands-stitching a European coat in the 󈧢s may have the soft glow from the eco-friendly-shaded desk light lighting the sunday paper disseminate up for grabs the gentle “tik-tik” appear created by Snowy’s toenails while he trots along. As well as the wry humor in the books emerges intact: An obsessive wallet-stealer moans, “I’m not always a poor person. I’m a kleptomaniac!” The squabbling twin personnel Thomson and Thompson, utilizing their scrubbing-brush mustaches and bowler hats, also make several looks, their voices provided by Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. Somewhat The Adventures of Tintin is just too perfectly perfect. Spielberg and also the team have checked out the means by which Herg moved the knowledge from panel to panel and copied it with utmost precision. It’s great to date because it is going. Nevertheless the movie fairly vibrates with this particular showing-off quality that Spielberg just can’t shake. Still, Tintin musters lots of enjoyable energy — John Williams’ jaunty score, particularly, is simply the type of soundtrack you’d want following you around for anyone who is a red-colored-colored-headed adventurer in tweed plus-fours, rooting around for secret treasure. Nevertheless it’s Snowy nobody won my heart: Delighted with the aroma from the sandwich or going through a camel the first time, he’s whatever you’d need a cartoon terrier being. His hobbies are passionate, but his attitude is casual. He’s the primary one factor inside the Adventures of Tintin that’s never trying too much. Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter. Matt Damon Still Bourne - Or Desires to Be, Anyway

Regardless of the frustration and angst ventilation with the franchise’s erstwhile star, Matt Damon hasn’t quit hope of reprising his role as super-spy Jason Bourne: “I think if [Bourne Legacy] doesn’t work, we could just neglected and pretend it didn’t happen, which’d be fine. However expect that it's going to work and merely let us once we did another, that people’d enjoy.” With Paul Greengrass instead of Tony Gilroy, clearly, but anyway. Hang your hopes accordingly. Pour a Proper Cup of Tea Today for Christopher Hitchens

He had divisive opinions and a rare mind, but the late, great Christopher Hitchens also, from time to time, deviated from politics, culture, and history to examine other important issues including film, filmmakers, and — importantly! — how to make tea. Pour one out for Hitch today — the proper way, no dunking — with his wise words from last year. “If you use a pot at all, make sure it is pre-warmed. (I would add that you should do the same thing even if you are only using a cup or a mug.) Stir the tea before letting it steep. But this above all: “[O]ne should take the teapot to the kettle, and not the other way about. The water should be actually boiling at the moment of impact, which means that one should keep it on the flame while one pours.” This isn’t hard to do, even if you are using electricity rather than gas, once you have brought all the makings to the same scene of operations right next to the kettle. It’s not quite over yet. If you use milk, use the least creamy type or the tea will acquire a sickly taste. And do not put the milk in the cup first—family feuds have lasted generations over this—because you will almost certainly put in too much. Add it later, and be very careful when you pour. Finally, a decent cylindrical mug will preserve the needful heat and flavor for longer than will a shallow and wide-mouthed—how often those attributes seem to go together—teacup. Orwell thought that sugar overwhelmed the taste, but brown sugar or honey are, I believe, permissible and sometimes necessary.Until relatively few years ago, practically anything hot and blackish or brackish could be sold in America under the name of coffee. It managed both to be extremely weak and extremely bitter, and it was frequently at boiling point, though it had no call to be. (I use the past tense, though there are many places where this is still true, and it explains why free refills can be offered without compunction.) At least in major cities, consumers now have a better idea how to stick up for themselves, often to an irksome degree, as we know from standing behind people who are too precise about their latte, or whatever it’s called.Next time you are in a Starbucks or its equivalent and want some tea, don’t be afraid to decline that hasty cup of hot water with added bag. It’s not what you asked for. Insist on seeing the tea put in first, and on making sure that the water is boiling. If there are murmurs or sighs from behind you, take the opportunity to spread the word. And try it at home, with loose tea and a strainer if you have the patience. Don’t trouble to thank me. Happy New Year.” - Excerpted from “How to Make a Decent Cup of Tea” R.I.P. Christopher Hitchens. Leave your thoughts on tea making and other Hitchens concerns below. 'The Divide': Opening Scene From 'Heroes' Star Milo Ventimiglia's Thriller Released (Video)

No, it was America that sent her home, as the lowest vote-getter after Nicole Schrezinger tied up the score and forced a deadlock. Now, many were quick to blame Nicole for Rachel's exit, marking the second week in a row when the Pussycat Dolls singer felt the sting of harsh-as-hell criticism, but in speaking to reporters after the show, head judge Simon Cowell emphatically came to her defense. "[Nicole] didn't do this out of spite," said Simon. "What she was trying to do was to let Marcus [Canty] go with some dignity. No question, if she knew Rachel was going to be in the bottom, she would've gone the other way." PHOTOS: Get to Know 'X Factor's' Top 17 Finalists It's a refrain Nicole herself repeated not long after. She reasoned: "Marcus has been in the bottom two twice, this was his third time and Rachel's never been in the bottom so the probability was that America would've sent Marcus home. I wasn't going to be the one to send anyone home." The unexpected twist made for some great television, but the subsequent knee-drop breakdown by the usually poised Rachel was difficult for all too bear, especially Nicole. "When I saw that look on her face," she says, still wiping back tears. "That I let her down, like I dropped her when I could've been holding on. I didn't want to make the decision but if I had to do it all over again, I would've done the same thing. Because, how did I know? I have a big heart and I care so much, I feel it on me." Indeed, it was Rachel who had to console Nicole after the results were read. "She came to my [dressing] room and we talked and she said, 'Everything's gonna be OK,'" Nicole recounted. "This is new to me so I didn't expect this part was gonna be this hard.... Ultimately, America made the choice tonight." Simon added that, for Rachel, clearly something wasn't connecting. "This could be a good thing for her -- a wake-up call for Rachel and her career going forward," he said. "I've spoken to her and I said, 'Its' better to do this than be third in a weird way.' [Because] if we didn't know she was in the bottom and I thought she may have a chance at winning, that's a whole different ballgame. But being in the bottom, chances are she wasn't going to win this competition and Rachel said she thought she was." PHOTOS: 'X Factor' Behind the Scenes as The Top 11 Work Out the Week's Performances The head judge did, however, have a sense earlier in the day that something was off. He even tweeted as much. "I did have an odd feeling and when I was left with both girls, I was kind of torn. But when I heard Nicole say, 'I'm gonna give it to deadlock,' I actually sat back in my seat thinking, 'We're [going] through, no question or doubt.' Well, we all got the shock of our lives." And especially Nicole who was booed so loudly you could see the agony written all over the face. "I think Nicole felt shocked because when we are making the decision, we aren't thinking about the result," said Paula Abdul with empathy. And in an attempt to avoid last week's public outrage, which turned into death threats to some loyal Drew fans, Simon addresses that, too, "If there are death threats and stuff like that, it's crazy," he said. "Nicole is not a vindictive person." Added Paula: "What's great about this show is people are passionate about their contestants, but it's a competition -- someone's going home each week." And this week, Marcus stays, an accomplishment Nicole doesn't want to downplay. "God bless Marcus," she said. "He's surviving and he's earned his place to be here." Not surprisingly, Simon had a more blunt assessment. "I'll be disappointed if Marcus wins," he said. "I think Rachel is better than Marcus." 'Thor 2' Closing in on New Director and Writer (Exclusive)

Zade Rosenthal/Marvel Studios/Paramount Pictures"Thor" Marvel Studios is wasting no time in getting Thor 2 back on track after shocking Hollywood by parting ways with director Patty Jenkins on Tuesday.our editor recommends'Thor 2' Director Patty Jenkins Exits'Pretty Little Liars,' 'Thor,' Charlie Sheen Are Top Twitter Topics of 2011 Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the company is looking at two director prospects: Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan. Taylor's most well-known feature may be 1996's Palookaville, but he has become a huge cable TV helmer, directing episodes of HBO's Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos and AMC's Mad Men, among others. He also directed the pilot for NBC's Playboy Club. Minahan also is a big name in the TV world, working on Game of Thrones, True Blood, Deadwood and Grey's Anatomy. Marvel was also in the middle of hiring a writer when the Jenkins exit occurred. Don Payne had written a draft and Sheldon Turner was among those being discussed to work on the script, but the new shortlist of possible writers consists of John Collee, whose credits include Happy Feet and Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, Robert Rodat, the scribe who created the TNT show Falling Skies and wrote Saving Private Ryan, and Roger Avary, best known for sharing an Oscar with Quentin Tarantino for writing Pulp Fiction. Jenkins beat out several other contenders for the Thor 2 directing gig when Marvel announced her as its choice in mid-October. The move put the helmer on track to be the first female director of a Marvel movie and perhaps the only one to ever direct a big-budget superhero or comic book movie. That changed when word broke on Tuesday that she and Marvel were going their separate ways over the standard excuse of "creative differences." Marvel may be moving fast on the sequel to this past summer's hit, but it does have some time on its side: Thor 2 is slated for a Nov. 15, 2013 release. Marvel declined to comment. There's lots of press coverage in the Melrose deal together with other mega-budget "slate" financing plans in 2006 and 2007. 'Snow Whitened And Also The Huntsman' Trailer: Our Wish List

When the "Snow Whitened and also the Huntsman" banner which was launched earlier today was designed to make us amped for that teaser trailer being launched tomorrow, it certainly did a great job. The Rupert Sanders-directed action adventure film has lots of exciting things going for this -- Christian Serratos inside a suit of armor, for just one -- yet there's only been a tiny bit of low-key promotion going for this to date. Sure, the film continues to be a lot more than six several weeks from striking theaters, however the movie will probably be increased to recognition because of the very fact its trailer will most likely be added on before every showing of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning -- Part 1," which arrives next Friday. The banner got us considering all of the facets of "Snow Whitened and also the Huntsman" we are most searching toward, which hopefully we will have taunted in tomorrow's trailer. Continue reading following the jump to determine what you need to anticipate (hopefully) within the teaser's release. Christian Serratos Like A Badass It's understandable the greatest feature for "Snow Whitened and also the Huntsman" is always that it's starring Stewart. Although not only is she starring within the film, but she's also kicking some serious butt. Both in the marketing shots in the film, Stewart continues to be proven fight-ready and transporting a sword. It only is sensible that Stewart showcase a few of her recently-honed fight abilities within the first teaser trailer for that movie too. Romance Is Really A-Brewin' If this involves Chris Hemsworth because the Huntsman, there isn't much a lot more than you would think. He will get hired through the full to kill Snow Whitened, but eventually ends up determining to assist train her to protect herself rather. As frequently occur in favorite anecdotes, even ones tweaked like "Snow Whitened and also the Huntsman," the pair of them take presctiption an intimate collision course. Fans are utilized to seeing sparks fly between Stewart and her "Twilight" costar Taylor Lautner, so it will likely be nice to (hopefully) begin to see the chemistry between her and Hemsworth. The Impressive Fantasy World I'll admit, it required until I saw Sanders' advertisements and the vision for "Snow Whitened and also the Huntsman" at Comic-Disadvantage to actually be convinced that he's an ideal director with this job. He's a definite visual style that's well-suited to fantasy, as possible observed in the banner launched earlier today. It will likely be nice for individuals who were not in North Park the 2009 summer time to obtain a opportunity to observe how great Sanders' jobs are. Charlize Theron At Her Most Devious Charlize Theron is really a badass. This really is known. But she's especially badass and devious within the marketing material for "Snow Whitened and also the Huntsman." In line with the proven fact that she has been getting just as much amount of time in the photos launched as both Snow Whitened and her Huntsman, I am betting my bottom dollar that she'll get a respectable amount of screen amount of time in a clip too. Hopefully we'll even see some miracle at the office too. She's constantly something extra going onto put on that dress day in and day trip. The Dwarves The main one part of the film that's been noticeably missing in the promotion may be the seven eight dwarves. Sure, Snow Whitened cast off them with regard to The Huntsman in her own title, but nonetheless, they are a main issue with this film. There is one group picture which was launched, consider then they have been MIA. Maybe the CGI is not ready in it yet or possibly Sanders is simply waiting in order to save them for many large reveal, however i am certainly wishing they create a minumum of one appearance within this teaser. Exactly what do you hope is incorporated within the "Snow Whitened and also the Huntsman" trailer? Inform us within the comments section below or on Twitter!

9 Pro Tips For Breaking Into Visual Effects From Jurassic Park's VFX Pioneers

If there’s anyone who knows about breaking barriers in the visual effects industry, it’s Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett and John Rosengrant, whose computer-generated dinosaur effects on Jurassic Park forever changed the FX landscape, earned them Academy Awards and famously caused George Lucas to tear up with joy. But their work pioneering new technologies did not begin or end with Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic. The artists have worked on some of Hollywood’s most technologically innovative titles including Star Wars, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Predator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Avatar. While together last month to promote the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy (available today), Movieline picked the brains of the VFX legends to get nine pro tips for breaking into the visual effects biz. 1. Learn about the filmmaking process from a director’s perspective. This means make your own movies! Muren: “Study art, photography, nature because you want to have ideas for full shots in your head. Not parts of shots but the whole finished thing, even though you may not be [responsible] for all of that. You want to understand to the filmmaking process from the point of view of the director — even if you want to do special effects.” Tippett: “I would encourage that — an art and film history background. And there’s no excuse for not making your own movie. You’ll learn so much if you just come up with a little story that has a beginning, middle and an end. If you commit to doing it, you’ll learn so much more by doing that than most people going to school.” 2. Listen to the voices in your head. Tippett: “If you make your own film, it really helps that you know what a cut means. A cut is very important to know because it helps structure things. The sounds, too. When we started on Jurassic Park, I spent a week or so with [sound designer] Gary Rydstrom because it was very important for Steven to have the voices for the characters. That was very helpful to inform our performances. Once you have the voices in your head, then you can work to the voices. That knowledge is essential.” 3. Understand how VFX fit into the storytelling process. Rosengrant: “Recognize that we help tell a story and that’s what’s most important first. Understand that our role is to maybe embellish that story and make it more interesting. But know how you fit into telling that story because it’s very collaborative.” 4. Don’t just imitate your visual effects heroes. Dare to be original. Rosengrant: “I see people trying to get into effects who are trying to copy something instead of understanding the real anatomy of the art. All of this comes into play. I think that’s what makes Jurassic Park work.” 5. Think of your best friend as your worst enemy . Muren: “Your best friend is your enemy when it comes to breaking into the industry. I think it’s a very competitive time now, with film schools churning out so many effects people, that you’ve got to be better than your best friend.” Tippett: “They could be thinking the same thing about you — that ‘I have to be better than you are.’ Just strive for the best. Tenacity. Don’t give up. Keep plugging away at it. Find out if you’re good at it. You may not be good at it.” 6. Rest assured that visual effects is now a viable career option. Muren: “When we were starting out, there was no visual effects career. There were maybe 20 people in all of L.A. and maybe the world who did visual effects. They would hire people from different unions to sort of flesh out something. These guys were old-time expert guys that really didn’t know anything like we do because they did it so seldom. It’s amazing now that it’s actually a business and you can look at it as a job.” 7. Don’t listen to the job entry horror stories — there are visual effects pros out there who want to nurture (and not just torture) up-and-comers. Tippett: “It depends on where you start out. Most of us try to be good to the people just starting out. You don’t want to burn out artists. You want to encourage them.” Muren: “I hear a lot about that, too. That it’s really going on and [companies] are really taking advantage of it because there are so many people that want to do it. That’s unfortunate and I hope it doesn’t happen often.” 8. Don’t be surprised when the visual effects industry is not as glamorous as you imagined. Tippett: “I think one of the more bitter pills to swallow is the intensity [of VFX]. Because you think it’s one thing and it’s cool and sexy and it’s fun. Then you sit down and look at the dailies and someone says, ‘That’s wrong, that’s wrong and that’s wrong. Fix that, fix that.’ It’s just like [mimes choking someone.] Someone tells you, ‘Just fix it. I’ll see you tomorrow.’ It’s not like what people imagine.” 9. Get ready to continually adapt. Rosengrant: “[The new visual effects guys] are jumping onboard now after so many years of things evolving. We think back 18 years ago with Jurassic Park; during that 18 year period, things have been moving like a freight train. So when you get on that freight train now, you’ve got to have all of this other knowledge behind you. Study what went on in the past but get ready for a train ride.” Bonus: Exercise tenacity and passion. Tippett: “If someone tells you not to do it and you do it anyway, that’s a good sign. Because it’s going to take that tenacity. […] We were all obsessed [when we started out] too. It wasn’t a career ‘choice.’ It was like, you can shoot me or I can do special effects.” Follow Julie Miller on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

REVIEW: Aki Kaurismki's Ornery Humanist Spirit Shines in Le Havre

There’s a danger in dismissing Aki Kaurismki’s Le Havre as lightweight just because it takes the most generous attitude possible toward human nature. Being jaundiced about the world is easy — it takes relatively little energy to expect the worst from everyone. But it’s harder, as the dour Finnish filmmaker has shown us time and again, to allow for the possibility of surprise in the way people behave and treat one another, and the rewards are far greater. Kaurismki’s comedies are characteristically charcoal-toned — never quite black — but the unapologetically hopeful Le Havre is more silvery-gray. It’s an open-hearted Eeyore of a movie. Le Havre is set (and was filmed) in Normandy, starring an array of French actors. The best-known of those may be Jean-Pierre Laud, who plays a bad guy, an informer, though even that bit of casting is a sly joke, as if Truffaut and Godard’s impish devil had grown up to be a more malevolent troublemaker. And even though one of the key actors here, Kaurismki regular Kati Outinen, is Finnish, her character has the most French of French names, a movie-star name, Arletty. Arletty is the wife of Marcel (played by the soulfully weathered Andr Wilms, a French actor who has also previously worked with Kaurismki), an aged shoeshine guy who’s fond of his wine, but who in his youth, as he tells another character, used to be an artist, a bohemian. Marcel goes about his routine in relaxed obliviousness: At the end of a typically not-very-productive workday, he buys a loaf of bread on credit from a nearby shop and brings his meager earnings, minus the bit he’s already spent on late-afternoon tipple, home to the saucer-eyed, gently good-natured Arletty. She then hands a few euro back to him, suggesting he go around the corner for an aperitif — she knows how much he enjoys it. But then two things happen to Marcel in quick succession, drastically changing the texture of his life: Arletty suddenly becomes ill with a serious, possibly incurable ailment and must be hospitalized. At roughly the same time, a recently arrived shipping container is discovered to contain a group of African refugees. They’re taken into custody, but one boy escapes. The newspaper headlines urge citizens to look out for this dangerous criminal. One reads, “Armed and dangerous. Connected to Al Qaeda?” Marcel discovers the boy hiding near the docks, and instead of turning him in, leaves food and money. The boy’s name is Idrissa (he’s played, with silent-movie expressiveness, by Blondin Miguel), and Marcel and his trusty dog Laika (played by a honey-toned charmer who is, the press notes tell us, “a canine actress of 5th generation”) shelter him from the authorities. Marcel also tries to find a way to get him to London, where he’ll be able to rejoin members of his family. Marcel isn’t alone in his sense of decency. There’s an air of conviviality in Le Havre, in the way the locals gather for drinks and gossip but also keep tender secrets safe for one another. The various shopkeepers in the neighborhood, who often grumble about Marcel’s failure to pay his bills, send food for Idrissa. They also keep mum about his whereabouts when the authorities, in the form of the wonderfully named Inspector Monet (Jean-Pierre Darroussin) come calling. Le Havre proceeds from the usual Kaurismkian premise: Things are only going to get worse, so why not just go with it? And still, Kaurismki infuses the picture with his characteristic oddball grace. (He also tucks in a wild little performance from French pop singer Little Bob, a.k.a. Roberto Piazza, who rocks the joint in a red leather jacket and silvery quiff.) Le Havre is lyrical even though it moves forward in the typical Kaurismki fits-and-starts — its gracefulness settles like a mantle around it, more beautiful for all its bumps and wrinkles. The movie’s jokes are so gentle, and delivered with such deadpan assurance, that it sometimes takes a split second for you to register how absurdly funny they are. The picture is gently pointed in the way it rails against the aggressive tactics employed by European governments against refugees from other nations, and suggests a way forward, inch by optimistic inch: This is a wry mini-treatise on the necessity of being kind and having guts. Le Havre, shot by Kaurismki’s regular cinematographer Timo Salminenalso, is also gorgeous to look at: Frame by frame, it’s a marvel of lighting — the images look soft and bright at once, as if old Hollywood craftsmanship had been happily wed with modern straightforwardness and simplicity. The movie steps at first tentatively then boldly toward a blissfully happy ending that still manages to be true to Kaurismki’s ornery humanist spirit, and the visual beauty of Le Havre blossoms, quite literally, in the last shot. There is hope for humankind yet. Meanwhile, there’s also time for another drink. How Barefoot Teen Steve Jobs Helped Cure 3 Million Blind People

Steve Jobs' friend Dr. Larry Brilliant is former executive director of Google.org, an epidemiologist, Senior Science Advisor to the Warner Bros. and Participant movie Contagion, and current president of the Skoll Global Threats Fund established by eBay co-founder Jeff Skoll. Here is how he remembers Jobs:our editor recommendsSteve Jobs: 10 Memorable Milestones of the Apple Co-Founder's CareerSteve Jobs' Death: How the Magazines CoveredApple CEO Tim Cook on Steve Jobs: 'No Words Can Adequately Express Our Sadness'Related Topics•Steve Jobs I met Steve when we were all young and the world was full of promise and so, of course, we went to India as spiritual seekers. We had our first brief meeting when he was probably 19 or 20 in the 1970's, probably around 1974. PHOTOS: Steve Jobs: 10 Memorable Milestones of the Apple Co-Founder's Career I had been living in the monastery or ashram of Maharaji or Neem Karoli Baba in the Himalayas, but by the time Steve got to India I was working for the United Nations on the smallpox eradication program. By then, I had morphed from being a hippie to wearing a three-piece suit and going to UN meetings. Steve was still barefoot wearing robes and head-shaven. Maharaji was a great Indian saint who had passed away only months before Steve arrived. He had an ashram at a place called Kenchi in the lower Himalayas. I would come up on weekends from Delhi. Steve rented a small "Kumoan" hillside cabin about 200 yards away. He would come and get tea and food at the ashram. He was traveling with this wonderful guy named Dan Kottke, who eventually became the first or second employee of Apple. Steve had two pictures of Maharaji in his room when he died. PHOTOS: Steve Jobs' Death: How the Magazines Covered Steve had always been into mechanical things and, as he said in his Stanford commencement speech, at Reed he learned calligraphy and fonts and they combined into this unique combination of practical engineering with a profound aesthetic sensibility. I think one of the ways India influenced him was as he trekked around he came face-to-face with India's huge duality. He encountered both very holy men, and at the same time, terrible intractable poverty, suffering on a scale unimaginable at home in California. He also talked to people who had big phantasmagorical solutions to those problems that were monumentally impractical. I think being in India helped make him be committed to finding practical solutions -- less about theories, more about practice. VIDEOS: Remembering Steve Jobs Steve wanted to give power to the people. He talked about it all the time in the early days of Apple. But it was one thing to talk about it in the rhetoric of the 60's, another to disinter-mediate the priests, the elitists who controlled the mainframe computers. To take away their power and put on the desk --- and later the lap, and in the hands --- of everyone. The Apple II and the Mac put power on the desks of the people, reduced our dependency on the priests of the mainframe, and then Steve topped that by putting that same power on our laps, our phones, our pads. He was consistently democratizing computing power. When we were both back in the US, a Swiss investor gave Steve some very early angel money to start Apple and the same man gave me about the same amount to help start the Seva Foundation, combating blindness. Apple's success is, of course, the stuff of legends but Seva hasn't done badly either. Its projects have given back sight to more than 3 million blind people. STORY: Apple CEO Tim Cook on Steve Jobs: 'No Words Can Adequately Express Our Sadness' When Steve heard I was starting Seva in 1980, he called me up and gave me the first sizable donation to help build eye hospitals in India and do a survey of blindness in Nepal. We couldn't have built Seva without him. He was an advisor for years. He stayed involved even as Apple took all of his time; for example, when I went to Nepal to do a nationwide survey of blindness, I had no way of analyzing the data in country and it was inappropriate to try to bring it back to the University of Michigan where I was professor. Steve called me and said he was going to send me an Apple II with VisiCalc software to do the first round of epidemiological study in Nepal. He was very interested in how we could use that data to build a program. He sent us a very early Apple II, probably single digits in the serial number. He said, "I've got an Apple in my room I'm going to send you with this amazing thing called a Corvus hard drive. It's got tremendous capacity. It's all the most capacity in the market. It's 5 megs." STORY: Steve Jobs: The Apple Co-Founder's Most Memorable Quotes Two days later I got the Apple and it was perfect. It's still there in Nepal. It was Steve thinking about how to solve my problem trying the help us create a program to give back sight to blind people and that was how he did things. For 35 years, I've seen Steve's sweet caring nature. I know this was not everyone's experience, but it was mine. He was devoted to Apple and he was really devoted to his family and especially his amazing wife Laurene and his kids. He said over and over, I'm proud of Apple but Laurene and my great kids are worth 10,000 times more than any company. Whether he learned it in India through his spiritual striving or from having a family, Steve's values were elevating. They are not the values of the divisiveness of 2011. His views were from a different era and they were noble. Related Topics Steve Jobs Apple

'The Avengers' Trailer Verdict: More Hulk, Less Stark, Less Loki, Deeper

I've got a word for that makers from the new Avengers trailer: Transformers. Using the discharge of the very first full trailer for Disney and Marvel's all-star 2012 super hero tentpole, fans finally obtain a real consider the four primary heroes together -- The Hulk, Iron Guy, Captain America and Thor -- with a few semblance from the film's narrative displayed. Loki's back, so might be Nick Fury and Black Widow, Hawkeye's now in this area, and everybody's searching like they would like to perform some righteous ass-kicking. Cars explode, voiceovers portend, Tony Stark cracks jokes. Awesome. Or it might be as we hadn't seen all this before and expected each and every factor that people saw within the trailer. Which will get in the crux from the Avengers problem: Because of the scope and impact of the baby films, so how exactly does that one deliver something bigger, better, more recent? PHOTOS: 'The Avengers': New Photos From Marvel's Super hero Film Of course, for any film of the scale, this "trailer" is actually just a long teaser. We're not designed to see everything yet. The film doesn't emerge for an additional seven several weeks approximately, and also the studio and filmmakers need to avoid wasting build for that meantime. Still, have a look back in the first real Transformers: Dark from the Moon trailer. That involved figures we'd seen before -- robot and human -- but handled to share epic drama and conflict once we got hints of Chicago being completely destroyed in addition to great emotional moments (note Bumblebee -- a robot(!!) -- in despair). Besides theAvengerstrailer do none of the, however it recycles a villain from Thor. Author-director Joss Whedon better have bigger, badder forces behind Loki to increase the darkness quotient or nobody's likely to care. The Joker, among the best-portrayed comic villains ever at nighttime Dark night, would appear less terrifying if he was cut back for an additional go-round. Which reaches the size problem, too. We actually only see one street of cars wrecked by Loki. Seriously? Didn't we have seen that completed in Independence Day 15 years back? We actually require the Avengers with this? Audiences will need a significantly bigger threat to humanity to obtain committed to this showdown. STORY: 'The Avengers' Trailer: Fans, Industry React Which includes the showdowns between your heroes, too. So far all we obtain is two lame jokes from Stark, together with a backhanded compliment to Bruce Banner that basically calls focus on the ridiculousness of those superheroes to begin with. That's a harmful game to experience with fans, who would like these men/archetypes given serious attention. And at this time, Banner/The Hulk is an infinitely more interesting character than Stark. Iron Guy's theonly one we've seen more often than once to date, which second outing left lots of fans wanting, as well as fed up with the shtick. This trailer essentially does the task of having fans excited. But that's likely to put on off very rapidly, and you will find there's lengthy approach to take until Go Time, not to mention until any future sequels or further Avenger team-ups. Marvel, Disney and Whedon absolutely should have some bigger, better spectacle ahead, and become prepared to show it. That wow-factor bar is placed high -- and hang partly by Iron Guy itself. With no courage to place something large at risk -- within the trailer as well as in the film -- this franchise darling may have fans seeking vengeance. Avengers Marvel Entertainment

Raven Trailer Flies In

John Cusack has Poe better bluesWe got a look at some footage from period action thriller The Raven at Comic-Con this year, and now the full trailer is online over at Apple for everyone to see. The Raven finds John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe (yes, the man behind The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart and other classics of the horror literary canon). He's called in by detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) when a series of grisly murders crop up, all seemingly inspired by the writer's work. Initially, the eye of suspicion falls on him, but soon it's clear that the suspect is taunting Poe, looking to engage him in a battle of wits that also ends up threatening the life of his beloved Emily (Alice Eve).Directed by V for Vendetta's James McTeigue, the trailer gives off a definite vibe of a period-set Seven, though it remains to be seen if the finished product gets anywhere close to the quality levels David Fincher's masterpiece of crime cinema. With Brendan Gleeson, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Kevin McNally also in the cast, The Raven flutters into our cinemas on March 9 next year.
