Browse the New Coriolanus Poster: Rob Fiennes and Gerard Butler Square Off

I’m always nervous for adaptations of less-appreciated Shakespearean works. Should you’re likely to mount, say, Titus Andronicus, are looking for a method to result in the violence significant. Should you’re heading up a Tempest reboot, you suffer from the extraneous 4th act stylishly. And when you’re reworking Coriolanus, you need to — well — try to allow it to be interesting. Fortunately, Rob Fiennes is summoning his Amon Goeth fury within the poster for that new Weinstein adaptation, and Gerard Butler looks tough as his foe. Excited? This is Fiennes’s directorial debut. You are able to tell he’s dead seriously interested in the integrity from the picture knowing by his facial grimness and also the direct Shakespearean quotation he makes use of like a tagline. Maybe he’s kidding us also it’s only a three-hour looking contest between your two lead stars. Might be just like harrowing, frankly. [via THR]

'Avatar' Sequel Will Push The Envelope Again, Says Sam Worthington

While we await the official word from James Cameron regarding his specific production plans for the two Avatar sequels, we like to fill the void by asking all related parties for the latest news and/or thoughts on what they want to unfold in a return visit to Pandora. Zoe Saldana recently told us she hadn't heard specifics from Cameron, but thought they might start production next year. When we caught up with star Sam Worthington (who's sporting shaggy surfer dude hair for his next movie, "Drift") during the press day for upcoming thriller, "The Debt," he didn't have many specifics to offer either, just that Cameron is still hard at work on his "Bible." "That's one of these things he's needing to do to get back [into the 'Avatar' mindset] before he starts writing," Worthington said of the planned enclyclopedia-esque guide to the world of "Avatar" Cameron has planned. "He's told me kind of the layout of Avatar 2 and 3, the prospect is to film them back-to-back and it is humongous," he said. "I spoke to some of the visual effects guys that we worked with and they're excited, and they're also very challenged, so that's a good sign. Jim would never rest on his laurels anyway, but he's definitely looking to push the envelope again." When asked specifically what Cameron has told him about the underwater elements that the Oscar-winner has hinted will be a bit part of "Avatar 2," Worthington brushed off the question with a laugh and a smile. "He's told me lots of stuff," Worthington said. "But I'm not allowed to tell you anything." What do you think of the sequel plans for "Avatar"? Tell us in the comments or on Twitter!

Early Viewer Response Suggests Trespass is Joel Schumacher's Funny Games

Get out your grain of salt and join me this morning over at IMDB, where the poster-challenged, release-date-addled Nicolas Cage/Nicole Kidman thriller Trespass has doubled its positive viewer response literally overnight. Which is to say: A tipster points out that two people now claim to have seen Joel Schumacher’s troubled film, which is making the test-screening rounds even as it’s abandoning its Twitter profile and apparently skipping any semblance of fall-festival buzz-building. And while their comments run the gamut from vaguely positive to exultant sub-literacy — again, assuming they’re real at all (and they do seem to be) — let’s focus on the basics: Is Trespass just Schumacher’s version of the notorious Michael Haneke torment-and-torture effort Funny Games? First up, let’s hear from the redoubtable “trance888” (needless to say, spoilers and syntacticide ensue below): Trespass preys on our deepest fears of home invasions . Schumacher doesn’t want to make us feel better about these things. In this Movie he is hyper aware of his audience and their expectations for such a film. And so Trespass is as much about torturing the audience as the characters. The film begins so innocently. The couple ( Cage & Kidman ) arrive at their beautiful very upper class house after a social evening gathering . Sarah hears a knock on the door and she meets Ben Mendelsohn & a horrific vision of home invasion starts … The Kidnappers hold the family hostage for One evening. Violence is rarely threatened, as their insincere faux politeness clearly masks their hidden agenda of torture and humiliation when the situation gets out of control . It will take Sarah’s strength of will to find her way out of the situation and save her ” daughter ” . Trespass is one of Schumacher’s finest movies, The performances are outstanding across the board. The direction and writing are masterful .. The title of the movies suggests a Thriller with a couple of twists , however audiences are exposed to disturbing , sick , survival ride. It could easily ruin your day , clearly obvious from people’s reactions after leaving the screening . Haha! That Joel Schumacher, always ruining people’s days. Still, he had me at Ben Mendehlsohn. There’s more where that came from if you care, but now there’s this as well, posted this morning by “reenst”: The Movie was screened in Regal Cinemas - LA last Tuesday , I didn’t know what to expect from this film as I didn’t see any trailer or any promotional stuff . The beginning of the movie was slow but got interesting when came along. You could tell something was going to happen The story starts easy, but as it moves on, peculiar things start to happen. This movie keeps you guessing in such a way, you are riveted to your seat, hoping for a quick resolution to the terror. Although the story is very simplistic and nothing original, the film still manages to grab the viewer. It has flawless lighting and camera work, great acting and a truly disturbing psychological intensity. The violence is extremely brutal and unrelenting. The bloody realism may cause some viewers to turn their head. The film becomes more insane from this point on turning into a endless pursuit of cat and mouse. Some people may complain that the film contains certain plot holes. I felt that by director leaving certain things unexplained until the very end, it added to the intensity. Very suspenseful and horrifying Got it. Can’t… wait? · Trespass [IMDB]

IT'S OVER: Syfy's 'Eureka' Canceled With No Final 6-Episode Order

Last week, we scooped Syfy's plan to end its series Eureka with a final six-episode Season 6 order. Back then, Syfy wouldn't even confirm that the series was ending, saying in a statement that "although we do not have a commitment beyond six episodes for the sixth season, we are hopeful that this will not be the end of the franchise." Well, that has now changed. Not only is Eureka being canceled, Syfy has also reversed its decision on ordering a final six-episode season. I hear the change of heart was made high up based on financial reasons. Eureka, starring Collin Ferguson and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, has had OK ratings, with its current Season 4.5 premiering last month to 2 million total viewers, 893,000 of them in the adults 18-49 category. Created by Andrew Cosby and Jaime Paglia and produced by Universal Cable Prods, Eureka is now in production on its 13-episode Season 5 order. With filming coming to an end in only two weeks, I hear the producers are begging for a way to properly end the show. Here is Syfy's statement: After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best weve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.

Elisabeth Murdoch Won't Join News Corp. Board

our editor recommendsRupert Murdoch Pieman Gets Six Weeks JailAnalyst Puts Odds of Rupert Murdoch Departure at 25%, Upgrades News Corp. StockNEW YORK - Rupert Murdoch's daughter Elisabeth will not be nominated as a new board member of Murdoch's News Corp. at its upcoming annual meeting amid increased corporate governance scrutiny due to the phone hacking scandal.' PHOTOS: News of the World's Top 10 Scandals Viet Dinh, chairman of the nominating and corporate governance committee of the entertainment conglomerate's board, said so in a statement late Friday. STORY: Rupert Murdoch's Pie-Thrower Sentence Sliced Some observers have suggested that the head of production firm Shine, which News Corp. recently acquired, could ultimately succeed Murdoch if the phone hacking scandal ends up damaging the credibility of son James, who is deputy COO of the conglomerate, too much. For now though, the ascension of Elisabeth Murdoch at least to a board role seems delayed. STORY: Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Faces More Lawsuits Amid Phone Hacking Scandal "Elisabeth Murdoch suggested to the independent directors some weeks ago that she felt it would be inappropriate to include her nomination to the board of News Corp. at this year's AGM, as had been announced by Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch at the time of the acquisition of Shine Group earlier this year," Dinh said in his statement. "The independent directors agreed that the previously planned nomination should be delayed." He added: "Both Elisabeth and the board hope this decision reaffirms that News Corp. aspires to the highest standards of corporate governance and will continue to act in the best interests of all stakeholders, be they shareholders, employees or the billions of consumers who News Corp. content informs, entertains and sometimes provokes every year." Critics have argued that Murdoch family members, confidants and former News Corp. employees make the company's board anything but independent. Related Topics Rupert Murdoch News Corp. James Murdoch

'Talent,' 'Kitchen' top Tuesday

It was another tight Tuesday tussle for young-adult supremacy this week, with Fox's combo of ''Hell's Kitchen'' and ''MasterChef'' edging past NBC's ''America's Got Talent'' and ''It's Worth What.'' ABC, meanwhile, got off to an adequate start with ''Take the Money and Run.'' According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, Fox's apparent nightly victory in 18-49 was paced by ''Hell's Kitchen'' (2.6/9 in 18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall), which won its timeslot in demos and was on par with last week; it also hit a summer high in total viewers. It was followed by ''MasterChef'' (2.4/7 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall), which was down slightly from last week but placed a solid second to NBC's ''Talent'' in 18-49. As for ''Talent,'' it was on the low side (2.9/8 in 18-49, 11.6 million viewers overall) but again ruled as Tuesday's No. 1 program in both 18-49 and total viewers, a category NBC carried for the night. Kicking off the night for the Peacock was ''It's Worth What'' (1.2/4 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall), which was down from last week and placed fourth among the Big Four in 18-49. At ABC, ''Wipeout'' scored summer series highs for the night's 8 o'clock hour (2.0/6 in 18-49, 6.5 million viewers overall), placing second to Fox's ''Hell's Kitchen.'' It was followed by the debut of reality-based crime/caper show ''Take the Money and Run'' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall), which retained most of its 18-49 lead-in from ''Wipeout'' , though it did decline in its second half-hour (to 1.7 from 2.0). ''Take the Money'' was on par with the timeslot delivery last summer of ''Downfall'' but performed better than recent timeslot occupant ''101 Ways to Leave a Game Show.'' At 10, ''Combat Hospital'' (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall) was up a tick. CBS saw week-to-week gains for its repeats of ''NCIS'' (1.4/5 in 18-49, 9.5 million viewers overall) and ''NCIS: Los Angeles'' (1.4/4 in 18-49, 8.0 million viewers overall) but continues to draw modest audiences at 10 for original editions of ''48 Hours Mystery'' (1.0/3 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall). Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 2.5/8; NBC, 2.4/7; ABC, 1.6/5; Univision, 1.4/4; CBS, 1.3/4. In total viewers: NBC, 9.3 million; CBS, 7.4 million; Fox, 6.0 million; ABC, 5.1 million; Univision, 3.3 million; CW, 0.6 million. Contact Rick Kissell at rick.kissell@variety.com
